Fantasy football: Hot Week 5 waiver pickups

Washington back Ryan Torain

HOT
WAIVER WIRE PICKUPS

This is an unusual week where a long list of usable players are available on most waiver wires. With a slew of injuries and bye weeks in full force, this is the time to grab who you can off waivers.

A key pickup would be Washington back Ryan Torain with Clinton Portis out 4-6 weeks. Torain is quick and can also catch the ball out of the backfield...

The Patriots are on the bye this week but you might want to add receivers Brandon Tate and Julian Edelman now. They will get the most upgrade with Randy Moss traded to the Vikings.

Shaun Hill, QB, Lions, Kevin Kolb, QB, Eagles, Sam Bradford, QB, Rams, and even Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, Bills are viable additions to your team if you need a quarterback.

Michael Bush, RB, Raiders is a guy to grab with starter Darren McFadden expected to miss this week and Eagles back Mike Bell, RB, is another key pickup with starter LeSean McCoy out indefinitely with an injury.

Brandon Jacobs, RB, Giants hasn't done much but should see more action this weekend with Ahmad Bradshaw banged up with an ankle injury. Bradshaw will likely start but will lose carries to Jacobs.

Chris Ivory and Ladell Betts, Saints backs, are both viable pickups with Pierre Thomas still injured. Even if Thomas plays it will be sparingly.

Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Lions has done well this season and is a decent pickup if your tight end is on the bye.

I would also give Cowboys WR Roy Williams a shot if you need a receiver. He's still available on a lot of waivers in ESPN and cbssports.com leagues. Miles Austin and Dez Bryant are still the No. 1 and 2 guys, but Williams bailed out the Cowboys in their Week 3 win and will be given another chance to contribute this weekend coming off the bye.
